The e-toll process in South Africa has been introduced as a way to recover some of the costs of upgrading the highways and freeways in the Gauteng Province. Motorists from this province are required to register their vehicles for this system. Currently, an estimated 1.2 million vehicles are registered for e-tolls in Gauteng. Government has introduced new regulations which motorists are urged to abide to.
How can you register for e-tolls?
You can visit your nearest e-toll Customer Services Centre

Phone the e-toll call centre on 0800 726 725 (you can call between 6am and 10 pm, 7 days a week.)
Download a Customer Information Sheet, complete it and fax it to 0800 726 725 or email it to info@sa-etoll.co.za or you can hand it in at an e-toll Customer Service Centre.
SMS your vehicle licence plate number to 44004 and a call centre consultant will call you c=back to complete your registration.
Scan the QR barcode on the Sanral website and complete your pre-registration through the mobi-site. An agent will call you back to complete the process.
What are the payment method options?
Cash is accepted at Customer Service Centres and at Mobile Payment Stations.
Credit cards are accepted at Customer Service Centres, through the call centre, via online registration, via SMS and fax registrations.
Debit cards are accepted at Customer Service Centres and Mobile Payment Stations.
Electronic transfers are not acceptable.
What you need to register:
- Valid I.D.
- Physical and postal address
- Contact details: cell phone, landline, fax number and/or email address
- Account payment details
- Vehicle Licence plate number
- Make and model of your vehicle
Once you are registered you can link your e-tag to your e-toll account.
Tariffs and Discounts:
Toll fees are charged per overhead gantry passed, so each time a vehicle passes underneath a gantry, a toll fee is charged as a single transaction.
Fees are calculated like this:
Kilometre distance gantry represents x cents per kilometre rate for the different vehicle classes
