First National Bank is among the top four banking institutions in South Africa. With a business footprint that stretches further into Africa, FNB has earned the trust and respect of industry players and customers by being innovative with its product offering. One of the fastest offerings to come out of FNB are NFC credit cards.
Near Field Communication (NFC) is the set of protocols that enables smartphones and other devices to establish radio communication with each other by touching the devices together or bringing them into proximity to a distance of typically 10cm or less. FNB has therefore tapped into this technology to start offering NFC credit cards.
This card allows the cardholder to make contactless payments, but its dependent on whether the retailers point of sale system supports NFC functionality. If NFC is not supported, the credit card works via conventional chip and pin.
The roll out of this card by FNB has been planned in such a way that as customers go to have their expired credit cards replaced, the new credit card will have the contactless payment features. These cards are also supplied with additional consumer information.
