Oprah Winfrey is the world’s first Black woman billionaire. Born into poverty in rural Mississippi, and raised in difficult circumstances, she overcame great adversity to rise to the top of her field. That certainly is an impressive track record.
What can we learn from her career that can inspire us with our own wealth creation process?
1. Oprah showed that she cares about people
While some may question the sincerity of her caring, this is a woman with a big philanthropic heart. Her school near Jozi is a case in point. As a result, people turned into her show, and the advertising dollars just kept rolling in.
2. Oprah served billions, so she made billions
Even today, Oprah still serves people and connects with them. Her 25 years on air also did a lot to connect with many people around the world, who loved her candour and her compassion.
3. Oprah used her connections wisely, and grew the opportunities
Everyone has opportunities given to them, but few people take advantage of them as well as Oprah has. She saw gaps in the marketplace and used them to help maximise her personal brand.
4. She created products and services that had utility
Her book club was particularly popular, and anyone who got onto it instantly had a bestseller on their hands. Her guests and discussion topics were engaging and interesting, and she always stayed current, which kept her relevant. This is true even today.
5. She embraced the WOW factor
Who could ever forget the episode where every guest in the audience got a free car? the enormous amount of publicity generated for her sponsors meant that she could leverage her power to create a really big bang for the buck.
