South Africa has for the past twenty years registered some of the first ever domains and The ZA Central Registry (ZACR) joins 221 .co.za domains in celebrating the 20th anniversary of their registration with South Africa’s central domain name registry. The domain names first made their appearance in 1995, and since then more than one million .za domains have been registered.
Some of the first .za domain names include mtn.co.za, multichoice.co.za, bmw.co.za, jse.co.za, nestle.co.za, anglo.co.za, and telkom.co.za. ZACR said that the first group of 221 .co.za Platinum domain names are significant because they had the vision to invest in the fledgling .ZA domain name system. The registration of these domains happened at a time when it was trendy for South African firms to use a .com domain. As such, the registration company commend these registrants for their early confidence in South Africa’s homegrown domain name registry.
The ZACR operates co.za, web.za, org.za, net.za, and the city Top Level Domains of .capetown (‘dotCapeTown’), .joburg (‘dotJoburg’) and .durban (‘dotDurban).
The latest .za registration statistics and a breakdown of the numbers according to co.za, web.za, org.za, net.za, and the cTLDs are available at Registry.net.za
