Garmini, an international GPS specialist has purchased iKubu a South African tech company which manufactures bike mounted radar called Backtracker. The Backtracker is a system that enables cyclists to be aware of what’s happening around them on the road.
Garmini is Stelenbosch-based start-up that specializes in radar and computer vision technology. The company was on its mature stage of completing its bike-mounted radar called backtracker.
How it works:
In a statement, Garmini said, “Garmini is a technological leader among cyclists, and we are looking forward to integrating our technology and expertise into iKubu’s outstanding products.”
“iKubu was in the final stages of developing the Backtracker low-energy bike radar, a device that provides unparalleled situational awareness by giving the cyclist the speed and distance of vehicles that are approaching from behind,” said Garmini.
It added: “The road is scanned by a rear-facing radar module that also doubles as a dynamically flashing caution light, and the information is caution light and the information is sent wirelessly to a handlebar-mounted head unit.”
