What is MasterCard SecureCode?
SecureCode is a new service offered by MasterCard in conjunction with various banking institutions. It’s a service that offers peace of mind when you shop online by providing added protection against unauthorised use of your activated card.
The service essentially provides enhanced security for online shopping. Only you and your financial institution know what your code is – merchants aren’t able to see it. It’s also widely used across the world, with more than one million merchants in 122 countries supporting transactions made with SecureCode.
With an increase in the amount of phishing scandals locally and internationally, people are less trusting of the online shopping experience. The idea of divulging personal information scares many people. Fortunately, financial institutions and services have created unique solutions to make the online shopping process safer.
Using MasterCard SecureCode is a simple process. It works automatically at participating merchants. There is no special login required.
When you correctly enter your SecureCode during an online purchase at a participating merchant, you confirm that you are the authorised cardholder and your purchase is then completed. The actual code is not accessible by any other party other than yourself and your bank, so you can be assured that the process is completely safe.
When you make an online purchase and enter your MasterCard payment information, a screen from your bank will automatically appear and prompt you for your SecureCode.
It works with most browsers and all you need to do is to ensure that JavaScript is enabled.
Each time you make an online purchase at a participating merchant, a screen will ask you to enter your SecureCode.
The only time you need to update your SecureCode profile yourself is when your email address changes. Make sure that you keep your details safe and keep your passwords safe.
