We are social, a South African based media agency, released a “compendium of the global digital statistics” showing the ranking of top active social platforms in South Africa. Also in this study were the statistics on a few slides of internet usage and penetration in South Africa.
The report ranks social networks and messaging services based on what users used most. The report which is titled “Digital Social and Mobile in 2015” summarizes the most popular active social platforms in South Africa.
The table below has percentages that represent the total national population who used the platforms in the past month; the figures provided in millions of users are derived from the percentages given.

Worth noting is that home-grown messaging platform Mixt was not part of the study.
But a report by World Wide Worx that was released last year in September cites that the average number of unique users on Mxit within a month period was 4.9 million.
