What are Adult Basic Education and Training Centres?
Adult Basic Education and Training is available to adults who want to finish their basic education. ABET Centres are designed to facilitate programs that will assist individuals who want to get their basic education.
In South Africa, there are an estimated 3.3 million illiterate adults in South Africa. There is a need for facilities in various communities to be able to give individuals access to basic education.
There are 4 types of adult basic education and training centres in South Africa, namely:
- Government
- Individual
- Business
- Skills Education Training Authorities
In the nine provinces in South Africa, there are various ABET centre available. These training centres must be Umalusi accredited. Centres are typically based in community learning centres managed by local communities and supported by the Education Department.
