The Cape Town Child Welfare Society has been in existence since 1908.It has helped over a million children emerge from crisis situations ranging from alcohol abuse, poverty, homelessness and crime, severe neglect, physical and sexual abuse. It has a main goal of helping children break the cycle of despair.
Operating in areas including Athlone, Langa, Khayelitsha, Ottery, Pelican Park, etc, it is South Africa’s oldest and second-largest child welfare organisation.
The organisation works in conjunction with law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders to act against the violation of children’s rights.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), children are the victims of 41% all rapes reported. A study done by The South African Medical Research Council in 2009 showed that South Africa had more than a thousand child homicides annually. Nearly half (44.5%) of all child homicides were due to child abuse and neglect. These are only a few shocking statistics about child abuse in South Africa. They are enough to drive the need for more awareness and action taken towards protecting children.
Cape Town Child Welfare Society strives to promote the wellbeing of children- predominantly those in poor socio-economic communities. These children are in need of support and guidance. They need someone to advocate and lobby on behalf of their rights as children.
