Every year Forbes magazine publishes their list of rich black people, which is known as the “Forbes Black Billionaires List”. The 2015 list featured regular names, while some individuals’ fortunes have major dents in them because of the tough economic environment. Despites this, these individuals still make the top ten billionaires’ list:
Aliko Dangote, the Nigerian billionaire, made his fortune through cement, sugar and oil. He has amassed a fortune of $15.7 billion and tops the list of rich black people in the world.
Mohamed Al-Amoudi whose mother is Ethiopian, has a net worth of $10.9 billion.
Mike Adenuga from Nigeria is the founder of Globacom, Nigeria’s second largest mobile phone network with 24 million subscribers. He has a net worth of $4 billion.
Angolan Isabel dos Santos has a net worth of $3.3 billion. She is currently the world’s richest black woman and she is the richest woman in Africa. She made her money mainly through savvy investments.
Oprah Winfrey, the American media mogul continues to make the list. Winfrey also claims the title of being the richest African American. Through her Harpo Production company she has managed to amass a fortune of $3 billion. When she started her television network OWN, it was expected that her fortune would take a knock. Since then however, she has gone on to produce films while also overseeing operations at OWN.
South African Patrice Motsepe is a mining magnate and founder of African Rainbow Minerals. His net worth is an estimated $2.1 billion. Motsepe recently made headlines by giving away half his money to the less fortunate. He also has a stake in Sanlam.
Folorunslo Alakija is the first female billionaire from Nigeria. She made her money through oil and fashion and has an estimated net worth of $1.9 billion.
Rounding up the top ten are Theophilus Danjuma, a self-made billionaire from Nigeria, Mo Ibrahim, the British entrepreneur who mad money through mobile and telecommunications, as well as Tony Elumelu who has an extensive portfolio of real estate across Nigeria, with a net worth of an estimated $1 billion.
